Poe's Stories The Fall of the House of Usher Summary & Analysis

fall of the house of usher synopsis

Since from the beginning of the story, the readers see that there is something wrong with the house, and certainly, the fissure/crack splits the house and destroys it. Moreover, the inexplicable diseases of the mind and body in Roderick Usher and Madeline Usher show the story belongs to the genre of Gothic or horror fiction. Doppelganger is the character double and portrays the doubling of the literary forms or inanimate structures.

The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it. Further, Roderick believes that his fate is connected to the family mansion. Whether the reader is trapped by the house or by its inhabitants is unclear. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family.

Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility. As Roderick talks about his sister’s illness, the narrator sees her pass through a distant part of the house. Inshort, the narrator assists his host in entombing the body temporarily in,first, a coffin with its lid screwed down, and then in a vault behind a massiveiron door of profound weight. There she remains for a week, as Roderick roamsthrough his house aimlessly, or sits and stares vacantly at nothing for longhours. The story opens with the narrator riding alone on a cloudy autumn day to theHouse of Usher.

What happens after all the Ushers die?

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. The narrator quickly closes the window and tells Usher that it is merely an electrical phenomenon or gases expelled from the tarn. The story describes a hero, Ethelred, who breaks down the door to an evil hermit’s dwelling after being denied entrance (21).

This crack, or division, between the living and the dead will be so critical that it will culminate ultimately in the Fall of the House of Usher. In fact, the greatness of this story lies more in the unity of design and the unity of atmosphere than it does in the plot itself. In terms of what plot there is, it is set somewhere in the past, and we find out that the narrator and Roderick Usher have been friends and schoolmates previous to the story's beginning. The house, the barren landscape, the bleak walls, the rank sedges in the moat — all these create a "sickening of the heart — an unredeemed dreariness." This is a tone which will become the mood throughout the entire story. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family.

He paces around the room, and Roderick entersin a state of restrained hysteria. The storm intensifies, and objects in theroom glow with unnatural light from the mist that surrounds the mansion. Usher moves hischair to face the door, murmuring under his breath while the narrator reads tohim. Poe's Short Stories

The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was. The medicines regulators try to stop the opioid epidemic that Roderick and Madeline started. They killed millions of people for their own benefit and lived a life of privilege. After Roderick’s death, Juno inherits everything and dissolves the company. The money is used for rehabilitation programs as well as addiction and recovery research. The file will get found after all the Ushers die, and Arthur will go to prison.

At the request of Usher, the narrator helps carry the "encoffined" body to an underground vault where the atmosphere is so oppressive that their torches almost go out. Again Poe is using a highly effective gothic technique by using these deep, dark underground vaults, lighted only by torches, and by having a dead body carried downward to a great depth where everything is dank, dark, and damp. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house.

There is a dreary landscape, haunted house, mysterious sickness, and double personality. Even though the gothic elements in the story are easily identifiable, some of the terror in the story is because of its vagueness. The readers cannot identify the location of the house or when the story takes place. Instead of using standard narrative markers, Poe employed gothic elements such as a barren landscape and inclement weather. This would account for his paleness and would fit this story in a category with the stories of Count Dracula that were so popular in Europe at the time.

For instance, it has sometimes been suggested that Roderick’s relationship with Madeline echoes Poe’s own relationship with his young wife (who was also his cousin), Virginia, who fell ill, as Madeline has. But Virginia did not fall ill until after Poe had written ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’.

Before killing Lenore, Verna tells her that Morella will recover. She will get better in three years and go on to save millions of lives around the world. They would be the king and the queen of Fortunato and be extremely rich. On top of that, they would never be convicted of a single crime, and their children would lead a privileged life. She informed them that they were sitting outside space and time at that moment. The night Roderick and Madeline killed Rufus Griswold, the siblings went to a neighborhood bar to build an alibi.
